Massage Table Health 101

Welcome to the first in our series of Massage Table Health where we answer some of the most common questions we receive. We’ll also provide information on how to best care for your massage table, which, beyond your hands, is probably your most important tool, so it’s worth preserving!

First off, here is our comprehensive guide to caring for your table upholstery to keep it looking like new for longer and ensuring it gives you many years of faithful service,

Vinyl actually needs to breathe. Like us, it doesn’t care for being locked away, drowned or smothered for extended periods! Before storage, always clean it down using the guidelines below and even day to day, remove all covers after your last booking, clean down and leave to air overnight before replacing with fresh covers the next morning.

Cleaning Instructions

Cleaning is a simple and worthwhile process to extend the life of your table. A solution of mild soap and warm water is all you need. We recommend a ph neutral dishwashing liquid with antibacterial qualities. This has a multitude of benefits (apart from being easily and cheaply available) in that it will not affect the material balance, the soap will clean and break down any oil residue, sweat, etc. and the antibacterial aspect keeps things nice and hygienic.

1. Mix a few drops of mild dish soap in a bucket of warm water.
2. Use a soft microfiber cloth or sponge to wipe down the table with the soapy water.
3. For stubborn grime, use a soft bristle brush on the affected area.
4. Rinse with a clean, damp cloth.
5. Dry the vinyl completely with a clean towel.

What to avoid

• Abrasive cleaners and tools: Never use harsh chemicals, solvents, or abrasive scrubbers, as these can damage the protective coating.
• Pure bleach: While a diluted bleach solution (10% bleach, 90% water) can be used for mildew on some types of vinyl, always test it on an inconspicuous area first and rinse it off completely.
• Direct contact with essential oils or organic cleaners with solvent properties, e.g. eucalyptus

Preventative Measures

To prevent damage and extend the life of your table, follow these protective measures:

• Provide a protective layer between the vinyl and your client with a sheet or towel. We have a range of washable and disposable options in different fabrics that will help to protect it and extend its life.
• Protect from sun: Prolonged, direct sunlight can cause vinyl to fade, dry out, and crack. Arrange your treatment room so your table is positioned out of direct sunlight or use curtains or blinds to filter. For mobile therapists, limit the time your table is stored in the car in direct sun, always try to leave it covered when in the car.
• Prevent moisture build-up: In humid environments, ensure the table has proper ventilation. Wipe up any spills immediately, blot with a clean dry cloth or paper towel to absorb as much liquid as possible, avoid rubbing which only pushes the liquid deeper into the fabric.
• Avoid heat and sharp objects: Keep your table away from direct heat sources like heaters or ovens. Avoid dragging sharp objects across the surface, as this can cause scratches and tears. Train Fido & Kitty to keep their claws to themselves!
• Keep temperature control in mind: Maintain a comfortable indoor temperature. Excessive heat and cold can affect the vinyl’s integrity long term.

Even if you don’t use oil in your treatments, we still recommend a regular clean down of your table. It’s Australia, it’s hot, people sweat and all material is porous so take those covers off each day and give your table a loving wipe down and airing, it will thank you for it.
