In massage utopia you buy your massage table, use it and abuse it day in and day out and it never lets you down. But this is the real world and even the best, most well-constructed tables need a little love and TLC from time to time.
It’s one of the biggest investments you make as a therapist so it’s in your best interests to get to know the basic ‘ins’ and ‘outs’ of your table to prevent damage and maintain its good looks and serviceability for as long as you can.
Here are our top tips:
When you stop work, clean your table and covers, don’t let oils and sweat permeate the fabric. Look after your upholstery and always protect your table with covers. Follow the manufacturer’s directions as certain products may damage the fabric either immediately or with prolonged use.
Give your table a weekly visual health check. Check for loose screws, frayed cables, loose hinges or latches, signs of metal fatigue or anything else that looks out of place. Basic things like loose screws you can tighten yourself but anything else you are unsure about, contact your manufacturer for advice or service.
Your table will speak to you if it needs attention. Its language is squeaks, cracks and groans. Try to identify where the sound is coming from, if it’s a joint it may just need a little lubrication. Your table manual should provide information of areas to look out for and what products to use and, if in doubt, call your manufacturer.
So now you know what to do it’s time to put these tips into action. It takes so little time to keep your table healthy that there’s no real reason not to! Give it the love it deserves for its faithful service and it will reward you for years to come.
