Mighty Magnesium
What is Magnesium?
Magnesium is a chemical element with the symbol Mg. It is the eleventh most abundant element by mass in the human body and is essential to all cells and some 300 enzymes.
Magnesium is one of the six essential macro-minerals that comprise 99% of the body’s mineral content. It helps build bones, enables nerves to function, and is essential to the production of energy from food.
Signs of Magnesium Deficiency
- loss of appetite
- nausea and vomiting
- fatigue and weakness
- shaking
- pins and needles
- muscle spasms
- hyper-excitability
- sleepiness
- abnormal heart rhythms
Therapeutic Value
Magnesium has been shown to have therapeutic value in treating conditions such as headaches, chronic pain, asthma, and sleep disorders. It has also been linked to a reduced incidence of conditions such as heart disease, hypertension and diabetes.
Magnesium in the Diet
Rich sources of magnesium include greens, nuts, seeds, dry beans, whole grains, wheat germ and oat bran. However the absorption can be affected by certain health conditions, chronic alcoholism, Crohn’s disease, celiac disease, or intestinal surgery, and/or the use of certain medications which can lead to magnesium deficiency.
Magnesium as an Oral Supplement
Though generally well-tolerated, magnesium supplements may not be safe for people who take certain diuretics, heart medications or antibiotics. Since absorption of magnesium occurs in the small intestine, those with medical issues in that area may remain deficient with an oral supplement.
Magnesium as a Topical Supplement
The skin is a living, breathing organ — the most efficient organ for detoxification with tremendous potential for re-mineralizing the body.
So long as a molecule or ion is small enough to pass through the porous surface of the skin, it will eventually end up in your blood stream.
Topical magnesium takes advantage of the absorptive properties of the body’s largest organ, your skin, so put it to work for you in the form of a spray, soak, or massage.
